In The Air

Welcome to Thunder Over Louisville, featuring one of the nation’s top air shows and one of the largest annual fireworks shows in the country!

As the official Kentucky Derby Festival Opening Ceremonies, Thunder Over Louisville typically kicks-off the Kentucky Derby Festival.

This year, the Air Show will be re-imagined, along with Thunder Over Louisville in 2021. While this year will not have in-person spectators, and will take place around the Louisville-area community, you will still have the opportunity to watch both the Fireworks & Air Show on the WHAS-11 broadcast and livestream.

We’re excited to share that once again, the Air Show will have a Category 3 Air Box, allowing for an exciting line-up of air acts!

Air Show Details:

The air show will be held for two hours on Thunder day with a Category 3 air box. This will allow for fly-bys, as well as some aerobatics!

Air acts at this time include:

  • The Kentucky Air National Guard and their C-130
  • Tuskegee Airman P-51
  • UPS and their Boeing 767
  • The 2019 Air Show performer of the year, Matt Younkin performing both a day and nighttime show
  • T-38s
  • Air Force tankers
  • Army helicopters

Tune into WHAS-11 News (the local ABC-affiliated television station) on Thunder Day (4/17/21) starting at 6 AM, or view it livestreaming on WHAS11.com. Bulk of the Air Show program will start at 3 PM.
