Covering Thunder
After the Kentucky Derby itself, the Festival's Opening Ceremonies tops the list
of media coverage and viewer/listener
interest in this area.
Thunder attracts media interest from around the nation, but it is the local media that has helped further the show's popularity by taking it to people's living rooms even if they cannot attend in person. Every local TV affiliate offers live news coverage of the event. Most area radio stations also have live remotes from the event.
Reporters request press credentials from all over the country and stations from Albuquerque to New York City have aired clips of the fireworks. The show has been featured on the Discovery Channel and the History Network during documentaries on fireworks. And each year, a two-hour remix of the event is broadcast to 140 countries on July 4th via the Armed Forces Television Network.
