'Thundernators' to Ignite Fireworks Show

The Kentucky Derby Festival is pleased to announce the two individuals who will serve as Official “Thundernators” for the 2006 Thunder Over Louisville fireworks show – World War Two veteran Bruce Voges and Allison Barber, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Internal Communications and Public Liaison. At approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, the Thunder Over Louisville fireworks display will begin. Barber will act as “Launch Activator,” turning a key to activate the Thunder launch system sequence; immediately thereafter, Voges will turn a key to ignite the 30-minute pyrotechnic show.

Voges served as a Chief Boatswain during World War Two and was aboard the first landing ship to reach the beach at Iwo Jima in 1945. Voges also was a member of the crew that sailed the LST-325 from Greece for its restoration and eventual permanent docking in Evansville, Ind. The LST is moored on the Louisville riverfront this week for public tours and a private viewing venue for Thunder Over Louisville. Barber is the architect of America Supports You, a nationwide campaign that “showcases and communicates America’s support for the U.S. Armed Forces and their loved ones at home and abroad.”

“Thunder Over Louisville is a great way to launch the city’s membership in America Supports You,” said Barber. “We look forward to working with the citizens of Louisville to ensure members of our military and their families know how much we appreciate their service and sacrifice.”

Thunder Over Louisville, the Derby Festival's Opening Ceremonies, will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, with the Foodfest and Thunder on the Ground interactive activities and exhibits. The air show starts at 3 p.m. and then “Thunder” rolls at 9:30 p.m. Thunder is sponsored by Caesars Indiana, Chase, E.ON U.S. and UPS.
