INTERNATIONAL HONORS FOR
LOUISVILLE’S LARGEST CELEBRATION
Thunder honored by special events industry


Nov. 10, 2004 – Boston, MA   – For the third consecutive year, the Kentucky Derby Festival won the Grand Pinnacle Award – the event industry’s highest honor – at the International Festivals and Events Association’s 49th Annual Convention in Boston, MA. The Grand Pinnacle Award, which the Derby Festival also received in 2003 and 2002, is a recognition of the best overall theme and image campaign among the IFEA’s membership. It was based on the 2004 poster design of local artist Joe Weber and implemented throughout the entire campaign by OTT Communications. The Derby Festival also claimed eight Gold, three Silver and seven Bronze Pinnacle Awards at the luncheon, six of which were in association with the Festival’s largest event and opening ceremonies…Thunder Over Louisville.


Thunder Over Louisville received awards for:

The International Festivals and Events Association has more than 2,400 member festivals from around the world.  The awards competition honored the best special events, festival materials, promotions and ideas among the membership. Derby Festival competed with events among the ranks of the Indy 500 Festival, Walt Disney World Events, Portland Rose Festival, Fiesta Bowl, Seattle Seafair and the Tournament of Roses.

First held in 1956, 2005 will be the Derby Festival’s 50th Celebration.  The Derby Festival is an independent community organization supported by 4,000 volunteers, 325 businesses and civic groups, Pegasus Pin sponsorships and event participation.  It entertains more than 1.5 million people in a two- week period and has a local economic impact of more than $93 million.  This involvement has made the Festival the largest single-attended event in Kentucky and one of the leading community celebrations in the world.
