THUNDER MEANS DERBY FESTIVAL IN FULL SWING

Following today’s Derby Festival Opening Ceremonies: Thunder Over Louisville, Festival activities continue TODAY. The biggest challenge on the day after Thunder is the cleanup effort required to clear all the trash and debris from the event area. Last year, 55 workers from the city of Louisville’s Department of Solid Waste Management and Services hauled off about 9,000 pounds of trash from the Waterfront Park area. In addition, private professional cleaning crews are already hard at work before the first fireworks are ignited.

The cleanup crews mingle throughout the crowd during the day, passing out garbage bags and encouraging people to use them. About 250 temporary trash boxes are put into place along the riverfront before the day’s events begin. The crews’ goal is to complete cleanup by 5 p.m.
