NEW BELLSOUTH DIRECTORIES TO FEATURE THUNDER ON COVER

Metro United Way receives check from proceeds of Thunder Pin sales

March 13,  2002. Louisville, KY. – Officials from BellSouth and the Kentucky Derby Festival this morning unveiled the cover design for the 2002-03 BellSouth Greater Louisville White Pages Directory. At a press conference at BellSouth headquarters, the design – featuring a photo of Thunder Over Louisville, the Derby Festival’s Opening Ceremonies – was unveiled.  The photograph was taken by local photographer Jonathan Roberts. In addition, the Derby Festival presented a check to officials from the Metro United Way for proceeds from the sale of 2002 Thunder Commemorative Pins.

Said Derby Festival President and CEO Mike Berry: “The Derby Festival is proud to have its Opening Ceremonies: Thunder Over Louisville, on the cover of the 2002-03 BellSouth Real White Pages. They may be the only two places you can find over 500,000 in Greater Louisville at one time.”

“BellSouth has been a great partner to the Kentucky Derby Festival for a long time.” Berry said. Having the cover of the BellSouth Real White Pages celebrate the Festival’s largest event is a visible testimonial to the commitment that BellSouth has always had to supporting programs and events that are important to our community.”

“BellSouth is delighted to be featuring Thunder Over Louisville on this year’s White Pages cover,” said Michael L. Seebert, Regional Director – BellSouth.  “Thunder Over Louisville, and the Derby Festival as a whole, add so much to our community.  This directory cover is BellSouth’s invitation to everyone in Greater Louisville to come on out and enjoy the Kentucky Derby Festival.”

In December, the Derby Festival began selling 2002 Thunder Commemorative Pins as a way to help raise funds for Thunder Over Louisville. The patriotic-themed enamel pins, which were available for a limited time, sold for $5 each, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Metro United Way. At today’s press conference, the Derby Festival presented a check for $8,223.00 to the Metro United Way for its contribution from the sale of Thunder Commemorative Pins.  This was based on 50 cents per pin for the 16,446 pins sold.

“The public’s purchase of Thunder Commemorative Pins demonstrated the community’s support of Thunder and enticed five generous sponsors to commit to its production for 2002,” said Berry. “The money raised from pin sales will go to help support the show’s infrastructure. We are also pleased that the sale of pins helped another worthy non-profit organization as well – the Metro United Way.”

Said Metro United Way President Joe Tolan: “The Metro United Way was very pleased to partner with the Kentucky Derby Festival on this effort. Thunder Over Louisville is an important community-wide event which provides great entertainment, as well as supporting services for people in need.”
