Two products with the same name will be marketed in conjunction with the Derby Festival Opening Ceremonies: Thunder Over Louisville.
You can eat them or win them, but both "Thunder Chips" are making their Thunder debut. Lance Snack Foods will be sampling their "Thunder Chips" to the 500,000 anticipated spectators at the Derby Festival's official kick-off. More than 200,000 bags are awaiting distribution in semi-trailers on the event venue (Louisville side only). The rippled potato chips come in a variety of flavors and first appeared on the market in January of 2001. This sampling promotion at Thunder ties in with their national product roll-out which includes a contest to win a ride on an Air Force jet.
A Thunder sponsor is also offering their version of a "Thunder Chip" to fans of the nation's largest annual fireworks display. Caesars Indiana introduces the first-ever Thunder Chip. The Thunder Over Louisville commemorative chip is a standard $5 gaming chip. Chipco International, an internationally known chip manufacturer located in Raymond, Maine produced the chip for the casino. Production was limited to 1500 and often these types of chips become collector's items. The chips are available (while supplies last) at Caesars Indiana's casino cage on the 2nd deck and also at the cage in the pavilion. Additionally, chips may also be available at some gaming tables on the casino floor.
Says Don Scheiman, Vice President of Marketing for the Kentucky Derby Festival, "Both the edible and the bet-able Thunder Chips demonstrate the value of tying your product, service or company to the Derby Festival's largest event, Thunder Over Louisville. There are not many events where you can reach out to 500,000 potential customers at one time."
